The SKF Electrical Discharge Detection Device (EDD Pen) is an easy-to-use handheld device for detecting electrical discharge in electric motor bearings. Spark erosion is caused by voltage discharge between the drive shaft and ground through the rolling bearing. This causes electrical erosion as well as deterioration of the lubricant and ultimately failure of the rolling bearing.
Variable frequency drive electric motors are much more susceptible to spark erosion in rolling bearings. As part of a condition-based maintenance program, an EDD pen can be used to identify rolling bearings that are susceptible to electrical discharge, thus avoiding unplanned machine downtime.
